New Area Code (742) for Southern Ontario
Iristel is proud to announce the launch of three new Canadian area codes, expanding numbering capacity in Southern Ontario, Alberta, and Eastern Ontario. As Canada’s largest independent CLEC, Iristel plays a central role in administering and distributing new area codes to carriers and businesses across the country.
New Area Code: 742 — Southern Ontario
Area code 742 was released for Southern Ontario on October 16, 2021, joining the existing 905, 289, and 365 codes that serve the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding regions. The addition of 742 expands numbering capacity for one of Canada’s fastest-growing regions — accommodating the continued surge in mobile, residential, and business phone number demand across the GTA and surrounding communities.

New Area Code: 368 — Alberta
Area code 368 launched in Alberta on April 23, 2022, joining the existing 403, 587, 780, and 825 codes. Alberta’s rapid population growth — driven by immigration, interprovincial migration, and continued business expansion in Calgary, Edmonton, and surrounding communities — has accelerated number exhaustion across existing codes, making 368 a necessary addition to the provincial numbering plan.
New Area Code: 428 — New Brunswick
Area code 428 was introduced to New Brunswick on November 21, 2020, joining the province’s existing 506 code. New Brunswick’s single-area-code history made it one of the last provinces to require a new code addition, but growing mobile adoption and business number demand have made the expansion necessary.
What New Area Codes Mean for Canadian Businesses
| Province | New Code | Launch Date | Joins Existing Codes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Southern Ontario | 742 | October 16, 2021 | 905, 289, 365 |
| Alberta | 368 | April 23, 2022 | 403, 587, 780, 825 |
| New Brunswick | 428 | November 21, 2020 | 506 |
| Eastern Ontario | 753 | March 26, 2022 | 613, 343 |
Existing customers’ phone numbers are not impacted by any of these area code additions. New numbers with the new area codes will simply begin being assigned by carriers alongside existing codes in each region.
