Iristel Wins 5G Spectrum for Rural Canadians
Iristel has been awarded eight blocks of the coveted 3500 MHz mid-band 5G spectrum by the Government of Canada — a significant victory for independent Canadian carriers and for the rural and remote communities that depend on Iristel and its Ice Wireless subsidiary for connectivity.
"While we’re delighted with these eight blocks, the CRA has deprived us of potentially landing 80 other blocks that would serve hundreds more rural communities, many of which are Indigenous." — Samer Bishay, President and CEO, Iristel and Ice Wireless
Why This Spectrum Matters
The 3500 MHz band is the primary spectrum band for 5G deployment worldwide. It offers the right combination of range, penetration, and bandwidth to support 5G services in both urban and rural environments. For Iristel and Ice Wireless, this spectrum is the foundation for delivering 5G connectivity to Canadian communities that have historically been left behind by the national carriers.

The CRA Challenge and Its Impact
Iristel’s participation in the spectrum auction was severely constrained by a Canada Revenue Agency audit that Iristel has characterized as groundless and drawn-out. The audit prevented Iristel from accessing the capital required to bid on an additional 80 spectrum blocks — blocks that would have supported connectivity for hundreds more rural communities across Canada, many of them Indigenous.
Iristel has been vocal in calling for accountability around the CRA’s conduct, arguing that the audit — whatever its eventual outcome — caused irreversible harm to the communities that would have benefited from the additional spectrum. The company is exploring all available remedies.
What 5G Means for Ice Wireless Communities
| Community Type | Current Connectivity | 5G Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Northern Indigenous communities | Limited LTE, spotty coverage | Reliable high-speed wireless for healthcare, education |
| Remote resource sector workers | Satellite or limited LTE | Real-time communications, IoT integration |
| Small northern municipalities | Basic mobile coverage | Smart infrastructure, emergency services |
| Northern tourism operators | Unreliable connectivity | Reliable guest Wi-Fi, digital payments |
Iristel applauds Ottawa for setting aside spectrum for competitors by preventing the Big Three wireless oligarchs from bidding on it — but we question the CRA’s draconian tactics that cost rural Canadians 80 additional spectrum blocks.
About Ice Wireless
Ice Wireless is Iristel’s northern wireless subsidiary, providing mobile services across the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and northern Quebec. It is the only carrier providing meaningful LTE-A coverage across Canada’s three territories and the only provider building toward 5G in Canada’s North.
